Turning 65? Here's What You Need to Know About Medicare

Understanding your Medicare options early helps you avoid penalties and make confident healthcare decisions.
Step 1

Check If You Are Automatically Enrolled

If you already receive Social Security benefits, you are generally automatically enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B and your Medicare card will arrive by mail.
If you do not receive Social Security benefits, you usually need to enroll yourself.
Step 2

Enroll During Your Initial Enrollment Period

Your enrollment window includes:
3 months before turning 65
The month you turn 65
3 months after your birthday
Enrolling at the right time can help avoid penalties and coverage delays.
Step 3

Choose Your Medicare Coverage

Medicare Original
Parts A and B
Optional Part D prescription coverage
Optional Medicare Supplement plans
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Part C
Combines Medicare benefits into one plan
Additional benefits may be available depending on the plan
Step 4

Still Working After 65?

Employer coverage may affect Medicare Part B enrollment timing depending on employer size and coverage. We can help you review your situation to avoid gaps or penalties.
